Short Term Goals:
My biggest short-term goal is to finish my 80+ credits at SLCC with a 4.0. I am so close, just one semester away from making that a reality! Most of the people in my life think I am insane to work so hard for a 4.0 when a 3.75 will get the job done, but it is something that I enjoy doing for myself; it makes me proud! I also feel it will give me an advantage when I apply to my chosen grad school in the coming months.
Another short-term goal is to get back into the anatomy lab as an assistant in spring, as well as taking on a couple new math students. I really enjoy helping people, especially in math and anatomy! Finally, I’d like to spend as much time with my family as possible over the winter break. They have been so wonderfully supportive this term as I’ve been busier than ever, and I’d like to make it up to them by having lots of fun between semesters.
Long Term Goals:
My long-term, overall education goal is to earn a combined Bachelors/Masters of Science in Midwifery from Bastyr University, and to use that education to open a birth center in the Pacific Northwest. I also plan to continue my education to become a teacher later in life; I’d love to teach in an anatomy lab, in childbirth education, or in any number of science courses!
I also have an unusual preoccupation with both real estate and finance, and at some point in my life I hope to dabble in those fields by having a collection of rental properties, and volunteering as a financial advisor in a teen-mother school or program.
On SLCC's Learning Objectives
Salt Lake Community College has set forth a list of learning outcome objectives expected to be achieved by every student in every program at the college. I’ve provided the condensed version of the list, but if you are interested in viewing the list in its entirety you can find it at http://www.slcc.edu/schoolofbusiness/docs/SLCC_SLO.pdf .
-
Acquire substantive knowledge in the discipline of their choice sufficient for further study, and/or demonstrate competencies required by employers to be hired and succeed in the workplace.
-
Communicate effectively.
-
Develop quantitative literacies necessary for their chosen field of study.
-
Think critically.
-
Develop the knowledge and skills to be civically engaged, and/or to work with others in a professional and constructive manner.
The first time I read that list I immediately noticed how well they not only tie in with my educational goals, but my life goals as well. My career of choice very specifically requires that I be civically engaged; that I educate my community and participate in activism in my field. Planning to own a private practice, of course I want to be somebody who is good to work both for and with. Working with pregnant and postpartum women, I will not only have to be able to communicate effectively with them, but also with their spouses and family, my assistants and various hospital staff..
I appreciate that from SLCC I’ve obtained not only the base knowledge education needed to continue forward in higher education, but through general education courses built around those learning outcome objectives, I will leave SLCC a better overall person; for myslf, my family and my community.
