A few weeks ago, I participated in a day of service with TRIO making friendship bracelets and kits for children staying at Primary Children’s Hospital. I brought my kids along which was really fun for all of us. They enjoyed making something to cheer up sick kids, and I enjoyed seeing them get so into it. One of my best friends has Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease that requires a lot of upkeep, including many days, weeks, or months spent in the hospital undergoing treatments. She told us that she remembered getting those kits as a kid when she would get admitted, and that it gave her something to look forward to in what was otherwise a very difficult time. I think that personal tie for us gave greater weight and appreciation for what we were doing.
While there representatives from The Thayne Center, which provides community service opportunities to students, came to talk to us about what they do and ways students can give back to their community through service. I was really moved by what they had to say, and I look forward to having the time after finals to go learn more about them and find out how I can get involved.
